Frequently Asked Questions

We understand that choosing the right fitness solution for you can be hard.

For both online and face-to-face personal training:

Question 1: How much does personal training cost, and is it worth the investment?

There are lots of variables here, but my prices start from £76/month for group PT. Support and accountability are the biggest differences between having a personal trainer and just following a program.
Most people fail by themselves because:
a/ They don't know what they are doing.
b/ They don't hold themself accountable, e.g. Miss sessions, too many cheat meals.

c/ They lack support, e.g. If no one else seems to be on your side is easy to just give up. Often partners and friends don't want you to change for selfish reasons.

So if your missing one of those three PT is well worth the investment.

Question 2: What qualifications or certifications should I look for in a personal trainer?

The base level for personal training in the UK is a Level 3 NVQ in personal training. The training commitment for this has reduced time and time again. It use to be 1 year of collage or 12 weeks as a condensed residential coarse. At time of writing this it was 6 weeks.
You want to look for someone who has continued to invest in their own education while gaining valuable experience with real time clients.

Riccardo, our coarse director, has over 30 years experience in an industry that most last 3 to 6 months. He also continues a program of self development and exploration.

Question 3: How do I know if a personal trainer is the right fit for my goals?

To know if a trainer is right for you first look at their skill set and target audience, it's a bit like doctors, you would want brain surgery from you GP, would you?
Once you know they're qualified talk to them maybe have one to two sessions to see if you get on. Training, while not always enjoyable, should not be something you despise, or try to get out of cause you don't get on with your trainer.

Question 4: What types of workouts or programs will we focus on?

Here at active NRG we are great believers in the fact strength is the foundation of all fitness. But that doesn't mean we train everyone like strongmen or power lifters. We meat you were you're at, that might mean working with just body weight exercise or less.

We aim to take functional body movement, like a squat, that we do many times a day and add a load to it. Allow recovery then repeat a little heavier.

Question 5: How often should I train to see results?

Training frequency will vary depending on a number of things, like age, sex, other activity including work and other sport.
As a guide an average office worker in their 40s would achieve the best results from strength training 3 times a week, with increased low level aerobic activity every day (i.e. getting your steps in), and maybe a little HIIT work.
Were as an 60 year old may struggle to recover training 3 times a week, but may thrive on twice a week.

Specific to online personal training:

Question 6: How does online training work—will I get a personalized plan or live sessions?

The main benefit of online training is the support and accountability, rather than supervision of technique that you would expect from face to face PT. For that reason, here at active NRG we aim to create community. So rather than 1:2:1 Zoom call coaching we do a week group seminar. We then have 15 minute planning calls to provide clients with personalized support.

Question 7: What equipment do I need at home for online training?

Too start just you and enough room to lay down! however, as you get stronger you will probable want to invest in some sort of equipment. We can adapt your training program to whatever you have.
If space and money is no object an optimal setup would include a platform (to protect the floor), squat rack, Olympic barbell with as much weight weight as you can pull of the floor and a bench.

Question 8: How do trainers monitor progress remotely, and can it be as effective as face-to-face?

Remote monitoring of your progress is done on an app were you are able to log workouts, weigh-in and other key measurements.

Specific to face-to-face personal training:

Question 9: What should I expect during my first in-person training session?

In your first face to face session we will review a number of things including, movement quality, flexibility as well as establishing current strength levels for key exercises. WE also perform your first weigh-in and take a "before" photo.

Question 10: Are there benefits to training in a gym versus outdoors?

While outdoor training can defiantly be fun and rewarding, training in a gym does provide a few key advantages.
a/ It doesn't rain in the gym (unless someone sets off the sprinklers).

b/ The temperature is constant, so training can be performed at a more consistent level.

c/ You have purpose built equipment on hand.
